Last Friday, I went to a speaker event with Deepak Chopra. He was mentioning the connection between inflammation and disease through the entire talk!
Yes...I got excited about that. We won't talk about what that says about me except that I've been working on a video series all about chronic low level inflammation. So I felt vindicated.
Isn't inflammation a healthy response?
The first time I learned that chronic, low level inflammation existed was only five years ago. I think I was experiencing some spring time allergies and I was considering doing an elimination diet.
One of my mentors, Dr. Aviva Romm, recommended a book called, The Ultrasimple Diet, by Dr. Mark Hyman. I wasn't trying to lose weight, I just wanted to follow a plan to eliminate foods that I might be sensitive to.
In the book, Dr. Hyman, introduced the idea that chronic low level inflammation leads to putting on extra weight, or fat, and fat leads to more inflammation.
Regular inflammation is a part of the body's defense system. When your body senses foreign invaders, a cascade of events is set off. Your white blood cells, and some specific chemical messengers of your immune system, called cytokines, mobilize to protect you.
So regular inflammation is a good thing. It helps your body heal and protect itself.
Chronic low level inflammation is a different story.
When inflammation gets out of hand and becomes chronic, your immune system shifts out of balance. Chronic low level inflammation contributes to disease and weight gain.
Being overweight is one thing. But what if I told you that low level chronic inflammation plays a part in many disorders, such as, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, dementia, Alzheimer's, arthritis and more.
More studies are being published all the time about the correlation between diseases we often associate with old age and chronic, low level inflammation.
In our modern world, there are many, many factors that cause this low level, chronic inflammation. Stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, and exposure to toxins can all lead to chronic inflammation.
I consider all of this to be good news.
It's good news because we can reduce chronic, low-level inflammation and we can reduce it before it even gets to the disease stage.
It takes many years for chronic inflammation to get to the disease stage and while you can't reduce it overnight, easy lifestyle changes can reverse the damage. Sometimes reversing it even before you know there's damage.
Having said that, if you pay attention to how you feel, your energy levels, your mental alertness, and other more subtle signs, then you can tailor these lifestyle changes to be optimal for you, individually.
So there's a lot you can do to feel better, have more energy and be more mentally alert, just by reducing chronic low level inflammation. And you'll improve your chances of having a greater quality life as you get older.
