Your Mother Told You So....
Eating breakfast within an hour of waking power starts your day. We all need that, right?
Breakfast is meant to supply a third of micro and macro nutrients, so skipping it isn't doing you any favors!
It has been said that "Eating breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper" is the best way to eat. Some studies are saying that it is true. Reference
If you've been following me for awhile, you'll know that we were traveling around the world from September through June of this year.
So we experienced different breakfasts in different countries. My favorite breakfasts were in Australia and New Zealand. It seemed fairly easy to find veggie packed frittatas and quiches, the kind of breakfast that fills you up and keeps you going for quite awhile.
In South America, the traditional breakfasts seemed pretty healthy. A hearty breakfast soup meant to keep farmers or ranchers going until lunch. In most of the small hotels where breakfast was included, it was heavier on breads and juice.
Europe tended to mostly be heavier on the bread, too. Croissant and coffee anyone?
We could really tell how good our breakfast was by our energy levels throughout the day (especially the energy levels of the kids!)
Benefits of a Good Breakfast
We'll start with the "why."
Eating a good breakfast helps you:
What Is a Good Breakfast?
Breakfast should always be high-protein and also have healthy fat.
Avoid sweets in the morning. Even orange juice! Try skipping fruit in the morning, unless you are having it in a high protein smoothie.
When you eat grains or cereals in the morning or sweet fruit, you will often notice a blood sugar crash an hour or two after breakfast. There's often no cure for that but a sugary snack. At that point eating that donut in the break room isn't about will power, it's about biochemistry.
Whatever type of breakfast works for you, you'll have more energy and likely eat less during the rest of your day than if you'd gone without breakfast.
